Following Pakistan’s early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, former cricketer Atiq-uz-Zaman launched a scathing critique of Babar Azam and his squad. The team’s defeats to the USA and India have drawn heavy criticism, prompting former players and commentators to express their frustration with the national team.
Atiq-uz-Zaman, a former wicketkeeper-batsman, did not hold back in a recent video circulating on social media. He criticized the players’ behavior during the tournament, suggesting that they appeared to be on a holiday rather than focusing on their cricket duties.
Atiq questioned the team’s management, highlighting the excessive number of officials and players involved. “During our time, the team operated with just a coach and a manager,” Atiq remarked. “Now, you have 17 officials and 17 players, and I heard you booked 60 rooms. That’s absurd! Are you there to play cricket or to enjoy a vacation?”
The former cricketer also took aim at the Pakistan Cricket Board, criticizing the policy of allowing families to accompany players to major tournaments. Atiq argued that this practice diverts players’ attention from cricket, as they spend more time with their families than preparing for matches. “You’ve created a culture where focus is lost,” Atiq lamented. “Players are out with their wives and children, eating at fast-food places, and not concentrating on the game.”
Atiq emphasized that such a lack of discipline is detrimental to Pakistan cricket. “You’re paid millions annually, yet you can’t focus solely on cricket for just two weeks during a major event?” he questioned. “This lack of focus and discipline needs to change if we are to compete seriously on the international stage.”
