Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins could only use the word “insane” to describe the six-hitting slugfest against Mumbai Indians in the IPL on Wednesday.
It was a game of many firsts, with SRH scoring 277 for three, the highest total in IPL history.
The Mumbai Indians remained in the game until the final score of 246 for 5. For the first time, 500 runs were scored in a game, with a record 38 sixes.
“It was insane. The ball was pinging around. Not until we bowled did it become a little too close for comfort.
“They found a boundary whenever they needed it, but we finished it off well,” Cummins said during the post-game presentation.
It was a batting masterpiece, but Cummins did not expect such a high total.
“You never play for 270, but we wanted to be upbeat and aggressive, taking the game on. It was a good wicket, so we had to suck it up knowing we’d hit a few boundaries.
“What’s important is to have clear plans for the ball. After SRH’s first win of the season, the skipper said, “There was an amazing atmosphere in the ground; I enjoyed playing here, and it was extremely loud.”
Opposition captain Hardik Pandya could only doff his cap to the opposing batters, despite his team’s valiant efforts with the bat.
“Wicket was good, 277 no matter how bad or good you bowl, if the opposition has to score that much, they have batted well,” Pandya said in a statement.
Except for Jasprit Bumrah, all Mumbai bowlers conceded more than 10 runs per over. Kwena Maphaka, a 17-year-old debutant, conceded 66 runs in four overs.
“The wicket was good, but 277, no matter how good or bad you bowl, means the opposition batted exceptionally well. The bowlers were good. Hardik Pandya said, “It was tough out there.”
“Close to 500 runs were scored, so the wicket aided the batters.” We could have tried a variety of approaches, but we have a young bowling attack, and I liked what I saw today.
When the ball travels so far through the crowd, it’s difficult to run around and finish the overs on time.
Everyone batted well, including Tilak, Ro, and Ishan. We just need to do a few things correctly, and we’ll be fine.
He expected Maphaka to perform well in the next game.
“He (Kwena Maphaka) was fantastic, coming into his first game and getting overwhelmed, he was alright and backed his skillset, just needs some game time,” said the head coach of the Mumbai Indians.
