The IPL 2024 match between the Rajasthan Royals and the Delhi Capitals was halted on Thursday due to confusion over tournament rules governing the use of a foreign player as a substitute fielder.
When RR decided to field Rovman Powell as a substitute fielder, DC head coach Ricky Ponting and director of cricket Sourav Ganguly were seen discussing it with the fourth umpire.
RR began the match with three overseas players: Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, and Trent Boult, but decided to replace Hetmyer with Nandre Burger as their impact player.
However, controversy erupted when they brought on Rovman Powell as a substitute fielder, with the DC camp pointing out that this meant RR used five overseas players in the match.
Look at what the IPL rules say:
RULE 1.2.5 Each team may name no more than four Overseas players (as defined in the IPL Player Regulations) in its starting eleven for any given match. RULE
RULE 1.2.6 A team may have no more than four overseas players on the field at any time during a match. Thus, if the team names a maximum of four Overseas players in its starting XI, an Overseas player may only play as a substitute fielder if the player he replaces is also an Overseas player.
If the team names fewer than four Overseas players in its starting XI, Overseas players may only enter the field of play as substitute fielders, so long as they do not increase the total number of Overseas players representing that team on the field to more than four.
Riyan Parag scored an unbeaten 84 off 45 balls as the Rajasthan Royals defeated the Delhi Capitals by 12 runs.
Sent into bat, Parag hit seven fours and six sixes on his way to his highest IPL score, as RR recovered from 36 for 3 in the eighth over to post a challenging 185 for 5.
In response, opener David Warner scored a 34-ball 49, but DC crumbled under pressure, with the bowlers producing a clinical performance.
Tristan Stubbs (44 not out) did his part, but it was too little, too late.
Nandre Burger (2/29) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/19) took two wickets each. Avesh Khan (1/29) also performed well.
