The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opened the door for aspiring coaches by announcing the availability of the head coach position for the senior national men’s team. Rahul Dravid, the incumbent coach, will conclude his tenure after the upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled in the USA and the West Indies in June.

In a recent announcement, the BCCI disclosed the commencement of the application process for the head coach role, which will be effective until May 27. The tenure for the selected candidate will span 3.5 years, running from July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2027. Notably, Dravid’s tenure extension, initiated post the ODI World Cup, will draw to a close after the impending T20 World Cup, culminating on June 29. Additionally, India’s cricket calendar includes participation in the Champions Trophy in 2025 and the ODI World Cup in 2027.

The application procedure stipulates a deadline of 6 PM IST on May 27, 2024, with a selection process comprising comprehensive application reviews, subsequent personal interviews, and assessments of shortlisted candidates, as stated by the BCCI.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has affirmed that Rahul Dravid retains the eligibility to re-apply for the head coach position, clarifying that an extension of his tenure isn’t automatic. Furthermore, Shah hasn’t dismissed the possibility of considering a foreign coach for the senior national men’s team, emphasizing the global outlook of the selection process.

The eligibility criteria set forth by the BCCI encompass various prerequisites, including a substantial playing background or coaching experience at different levels of the game, along with age limitations.

Rahul Dravid assumed the role of head coach in December 2021 and has since steered the team’s fortunes, achieving notable milestones such as reaching the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2022, the final of the World Test Championship in 2023, and the ODI World Cup in 2023.
