Dominic Thiem, a two-time finalist, was denied a French Open wildcard on Tuesday, forcing the former US Open champion to compete in qualifying to advance to the main draw at Roland Garros. The 30-year-old Austrian declared last week that he would retire at the conclusion of the season following a career marred by a chronic wrist injury.
Simona Halep, the 2018 French Open women’s champion, and Emma Raducanu, Britain’s 2021 US Open champion, were also missed by the French tennis federation.
Among those on the wildcard list were Alexandre Muller, who was knocked out in the fourth round of the Rome Open as a qualifier on Tuesday, and Alize Cornet, who will be playing in his final tournament.
The list also included American Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Australian Adam Walton.
