Sunil Chhetri, an Indian legend, is set for retirement from international football following today’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kuwait on June 6. Last month, the 39-year-old attacker declared his retirement from international football. The qualifier vs Kuwait will take place today at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

-Born on August 3, 1984, in Secunderabad, the skipper began his professional football career with Mohun Bagan in 2002.

-Chhetri played a critical role in India’s Nehru Cup victory in 2007, 2009, and 2012, demonstrating his exceptional skills and contribution to the team’s success.

-He helped India win the SAFF Championships in 2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023.

-Chhetri guided India to victory in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, allowing them to qualify for their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years

-He is the world’s fourth-leading goal scorer, after Cristiano Ronaldo, Iran’s retired Ali Daei, and Lionel Messi.

–During his 19-year career, this Arjuna Award winner has scored 94 goals in 150 international matches.

In a post posted by India Senior Football Team coach Igor Stimac, Modric wrote, “Hi Sunil, I’d want to extend my congrats and best wishes on your final game for the national team. Congratulations on your career. You are a legend in this game. I hope your teammates make his final game unforgettable. “Good luck and best wishes from Team Croatia.”
