India’s top-ranked tennis player, Sumit Nagal, has officially confirmed his qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

India’s leading tennis player, Sumit Nagal, has officially confirmed his qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics. “I am extremely delighted to announce that I have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Olympics hold a special place in my heart, and this is a monumental moment for me! Participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics remains one of my career highlights. A big thank you to TOPS and SAI for their support in recent months,” Nagal shared on X (formerly Twitter).

This will mark Sumit’s second Olympic appearance. He previously made history as the first Indian man since Leander Paes to win a singles match at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, defeating Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin in the first round, though he later lost to Daniil Medvedev of the ROC in the second round.

Nagal’s remarkable rise in the past year has seen him climb to an ATP ranking of 71, the joint-fourth highest ranking for an Indian male player since the computerized system was introduced in 1973.

His recent outstanding performances have significantly contributed to his leap in the rankings.

After making his debut at the French Open at Roland Garros, where he was eliminated in the first round by Karen Khachnov, Nagal went on to win the Heilbronn Challenger in Germany. He narrowly missed out on consecutive title wins at the Perugia Challenger in Italy, losing in the finals to Luciano Darderi (6-1, 6-2).

Notably, all three tournaments were played on clay courts as part of Sumit’s preparation for the upcoming Olympics, which will also take place at Roland Garros, renowned for its clay courts.

Before the Olympics, Nagal will fully focus on Wimbledon, set to begin on July 1, where he will be competing in the main draw for the very first time.
