While Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are expected to miss the Sri Lanka ODI series, Rohit Sharma might return from his USA holiday to lead the team.
With the Indian cricket team entering a new phase under Gautam Gambhir, there has been speculation about the availability of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah. Gambhir reportedly wants the trio to participate in the series as there are limited ODI matches scheduled before the ICC Champions Trophy in February. Following Gambhir’s initial meeting with the Indian team, a report suggests that Rohit might cut his vacation short to join his teammates in Sri Lanka for next month’s ODI series.
According to Cricbuzz, Gambhir, selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah held a meeting where India’s new head coach outlined his vision for the team and the type of players he wants in the squad.
With only two ODI series scheduled for India before the Champions Trophy next year, skipper Rohit, who is currently on a much-needed vacation in the United States, might decide to fly to Sri Lanka for the series. However, Rohit has not yet confirmed his plans.
If Rohit joins his teammates in Sri Lanka, he would undoubtedly captain the team. If he decides to skip the series, KL Rahul has been mentioned as a top candidate for the captaincy.
According to the report, Kohli and Bumrah will remain unavailable for the ODI series, with no reconsideration expected.
It has also been reported that India’s marquee all-rounder Hardik Pandya will not be available for the ODI series. However, he is likely to be part of the team for the T20I series, though it is yet to be confirmed whether he will be named captain.
