Amadou Onana is set to take over for Douglas Luiz, who transferred from Aston Villa to Juventus in Italy’s Serie A.
Aston Villa secured Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton for a reported £50 million ($64 million) on Monday. Onana signed a five-year deal with Villa, filling the gap left by Luiz’s departure to Juventus. The 22-year-old struggled to make a significant impact at Everton after joining from Lille two years ago. However, after playing for Belgium at Euro 2024, Villa manager Unai Emery is giving Onana a chance to revive his Premier League career.
“Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Amadou Onana from Everton,” the club announced on their website.
Onana, who has 17 caps for Belgium, made 72 appearances for Everton, scoring four goals.
He joins Villa as they prepare for their first Champions League campaign since 1983, following their fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season.
This transfer window has been busy for Emery, who has also signed Ross Barkley from Luton, Juventus duo Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea, Sheffield United’s Cameron Archer, Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, former Hull winger Jaden Philogene, and Everton’s Lewis Dobbin.
Both Villa and Everton have been adjusting their squads to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
