MS Dhoni could continue to play for CSK in the IPL, but it depends on a condition set by the BCCI.

Months have passed since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, yet MS Dhoni’s future with the Chennai Super Kings remains uncertain. Dhoni stepped down as captain before the season began, handing the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite CSK not making it to the playoffs, Gaikwad’s leadership showed promise. However, the question remains: Is Dhoni’s playing career over? Reports suggest that Dhoni’s continuation in the league hinges on the retention decision made by the IPL management and the BCCI.

With a mega auction slated for the IPL 2025 season, there is uncertainty about the number of players each franchise can retain. According to Cricbuzz, Dhoni’s future as a player in the league is possible only if the BCCI permits the retention of 5 to 6 players per franchise.

Currently, the players most likely to be retained by the Super Kings include Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube, though the exact order of retention may vary.

Earlier reports indicated that IPL officials had invited franchise owners to a meeting on July 31 to discuss the retention issue.

IPL CEO Hemang Amin reportedly contacted franchise owners about the meeting, although the exact time and venue were not initially confirmed.

“Amin is believed to have indicated that the meeting would occur in the late afternoon or evening on July 31. It is understood that all the owners have confirmed their availability for the meeting,” a report stated.

“While the exact venue has not been confirmed, the gathering is expected to take place at the Cricket Centre, the BCCI headquarters, located within the Wankhede Stadium complex in Mumbai,” it added.

The report also mentioned that the BCCI might allow the retention of 5-6 players.
