Thomas Müller scored twice within a three-minute span in the first half, leading Bayern Munich to a 4-0 victory over second-division side Ulm in the German Cup on Friday, marking Vincent Kompany’s debut as Bayern’s coach. Harry Kane and Kingsley Coman added late goals in the second half to seal the win in what was Bayern’s first competitive match of the season. Despite winning 20 German Cups, Bayern has not advanced beyond the quarter-finals since their treble-winning 2019-20 season.
Kompany was brought in as manager this summer after Bayern experienced their first trophyless season since 2012.
Müller, 34, opened the scoring 12 minutes in with a tap-in from a Joshua Kimmich pass, and quickly followed up with a second goal, finishing off a cross from Serge Gnabry. Coman scored with 11 minutes left, converting a pass from new signing Michael Olise, before Kane netted his first German Cup goal during injury time.
Earlier on Friday, first-division teams Mainz, St Pauli, and Hoffenheim all advanced past the first round of the German Cup, overcoming early deficits against lower-league opponents. Defending German Cup champions Bayer Leverkusen, who also claimed last year’s league title, will face Stuttgart in the DFL Supercup on Saturday night.
Ulm, promoted to the second division this summer for the first time in 23 years, struggled to keep up with Bayern’s firepower.
