NorthEast United secured their first major trophy, the Durand Cup, under the ownership of John Abraham by defeating Mohun Bagan in the final.
In a thrilling 2024 Durand Cup final against Mohun Bagan, NorthEast United defied the odds to claim victory. This win is not just a triumph for the players, coach, and support staff, who have worked tirelessly for years to achieve this, but also a significant moment for the team’s owner, John Abraham. The actor, who became the sole owner of NorthEast United in 2013 by investing his own money, has finally seen his efforts pay off after 11 years, in contrast to other franchises that are backed by large corporations.
Although NorthEast United has not yet won the Indian Super League, which is the country’s top football league, their Durand Cup victory over the giants Mohun Bagan is a moment worth celebrating.
As football fans across India celebrate NorthEast United’s achievement, an old interview with John Abraham has resurfaced in which he discussed the financial losses he has endured as the owner of NorthEast United.
“Every year, I incur significant losses (from investing in NUFC). I am a sole owner, unlike the other teams owned by multi-billion-dollar corporations. Competing with them is challenging. I take great pride in representing my team, NorthEast United. I am deeply affected when they lose, but I love this team. I built it from the ground up. I hope someone else will continue to take it forward and achieve even greater success. I also hope to receive government support,” John said in the interview.
However, the actor finally experienced a moment of fulfillment as NorthEast United defeated Mohun Bagan 4-3 in the Durand Cup final.
“The feeling of winning the Durand Cup still hasn’t sunk in. This victory serves as a lesson for everyone to never give up, to stay committed to the team and support it, not only during winning times but also when we are losing,” John commented after the game.
“There is always light at the end of the tunnel, and we proved it! Congratulations to the entire team and staff. I am just a representative here speaking on their behalf. The true heroes are the staff, coach, players, and everyone involved in building this team,” he added. “Huge congratulations to the team for making this happen, and also to the fans who stood by us and supported us through thick and thin. Thank you so much!”
