Australia’s Test captain, Pat Cummins, chose Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary 241 as his favorite knock in India-Australia Test matches. With India and Australia preparing to face off in November and December 2024, Cummins was asked to recall his most memorable Indian innings from previous Border-Gavaskar series. Instead of selecting famous innings like Rishabh Pant’s 89* at the Gabba, VVS Laxman’s 281 in 2001, or Virat Kohli’s 141 in Adelaide, Cummins picked Tendulkar’s masterful performance.
In an interview with Star Sports, Cummins said, “The only one I can remember is Sachin Tendulkar’s,” and humorously added, “I just remember thinking, ‘geez, this guy’s tough to get out but geez, it’s boring.'”
Tendulkar’s 241, played in the 2004 Sydney Test during India’s tour of Australia, is regarded as one of his most iconic innings. To avoid getting out playing cover drives, Tendulkar scored almost his entire 241 on the on-side, deliberately avoiding cover drives throughout the innings.
India-Australia Tests have witnessed many remarkable Indian knocks, such as Pant’s unbeaten 89 that sealed India’s 2-1 series win in 2020/21, and Laxman’s 281 in Kolkata, where India won despite being forced to follow-on in 2001.
Adelaide has also been the site of notable performances, including Rahul Dravid’s 233 in 2003 and Kohli’s twin centuries in 2014, his first Test as India’s captain.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins on November 22.
