magic win

In a major setback for the Indian men’s hockey team, key defender Amit Rohidas has been suspended for the upcoming Olympic semi-final against Germany following a red card incident in the quarter-final win over Great Britain. Despite not being shown a red card on the field, Rohidas was sent off after a video referral determined his actions warranted the penalty. Hockey India has announced plans to appeal the decision.

The incident in question occurred during the second quarter when Rohidas’ stick allegedly swung near the face of Great Britain’s William Calnan. According to the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) ‘Players Conduct’ rules, players must not use their stick in a dangerous manner or lift it over other players’ heads. The rules stipulate that a red card is warranted only if there is a deliberate intention to harm.

In real-time, Rohidas’ actions did not appear intentional, suggesting a yellow card, which would have resulted in a 10-minute suspension, might have been more appropriate. However, after the referral, a red card was issued, resulting in Rohidas’ suspension from the semi-final.

The FIH rules on ‘permanent penalties’ state that a player receiving a red card is permanently suspended from the current match and the team must play with one fewer player for the remainder of the game. A personal penalty may also be awarded.

Hockey India is contesting the decision, arguing that Rohidas’ actions did not merit a red card. The appeal will be reviewed by the FIH Jury Bench, with a decision expected later in the day.

PTI quoted a source saying, “Amit has been banned/suspended for one match by the tournament director. Hockey India has now appealed against this ruling and the appeal will be put forth before the FIH Jury Bench.”

If the jury determines there was no deliberate intent to harm, Rohidas’ red card could potentially be overturned, allowing him to play in the semi-final.
