The Delhi SG Pipers announced on Monday that they have signed three-time Olympian Jacob ‘Jake’ Whetton from Australia for the upcoming Hockey India League (HIL) season. The 33-year-old midfielder will step in for Dutch player Jorrit Croon, who had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. “Replacing a player of Jorrit Croon’s caliber is never easy. Unfortunately, his recovery from the ankle injury hasn’t gone as planned, prompting us to make this tough call,” said Delhi head coach Graham Reid in a statement.
“On a positive note, I’m thrilled to welcome Jacob Whetton to the SG Delhi Pipers for the 2024 season. Jacob’s extensive experience and skill set will be instrumental in filling the gap left by Jorrit. His midfield control complements our game plan well, and having known him since 2009, he’s already familiar with my coaching approach. I look forward to the energy and expertise he’ll bring to our squad.”
Whetton brings a wealth of experience, having played in 253 matches for the Kookaburras, scoring 75 goals, and winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The Queensland native also won the World Cup in 2014 and helped his team secure third place in 2018. Additionally, he earned gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (2014), Gold Coast (2018), and Birmingham (2022).
His accolades also include two Champions Trophy wins (2012 and 2018), a bronze in 2014, four Oceania Cup titles, and an FIH Pro League gold in 2019.
The Hockey India League is making its return after a seven-year break and is scheduled to run from December 28 to February 1.
