World number one Jannik Sinner advanced to his first US Open semi-final on Wednesday with a four-set win over 2021 champion and two-time finalist Daniil Medvedev. Sinner, aiming for his second Grand Slam title of the year after his Australian Open triumph, secured a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory. He will face Britain’s Jack Draper, ranked 25th, for a spot in the final. Sinner, 23, is the only top-10 player in the semi-finals, with 12th seed Taylor Fritz set to play fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the other semi-final on Friday.
Reflecting on the match, Sinner said, “It was really tough, very physical. The first two sets were strange—whoever broke serve started to dominate.”
Sinner took control of the opening set with two breaks of serve, capitalizing on Medvedev’s 15 unforced errors. However, the Russian fought back in the second set, leveling the match with two breaks of his own.
In the third set, Sinner regained momentum, cruising through it in just 30 minutes. Medvedev then had two break points in the fourth set’s sixth game, but Sinner saved both before taking the decisive break for a 4-3 lead. He closed out the match shortly after.
Medvedev saved 10 of 15 break points during the contest, but his hopes of reaching a 10th Grand Slam semi-final were dashed by 57 unforced errors.
