BCCI secretary Jay Shah is poised to succeed Greg Barclay as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), according to sources confirmed by NDTV. Barclay informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia’s chair Mike Baird, that he will not seek a third term and plans to step down when his current tenure concludes in November. Barclay’s decision follows Jay Shah’s intention to take over the role, which has garnered support from cricket boards in England and Australia, giving Shah the required majority to secure the position.
Shah will become the third Indian to lead the ICC, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. Shah, who is the son of India’s home minister Amit Shah, is expected to officially replace Barclay in November.
An ICC spokesperson confirmed that nominations for the next chair must be submitted by August 27, 2024. If more than one candidate is nominated, an election will be held, with the new chair’s term starting on December 1, 2024. The election requires a simple majority of nine out of 16 votes.
Shah enjoys strong support among the 16 voting members and currently has one year remaining as BCCI secretary before a mandatory three-year cooling-off period begins in October 2025. Under BCCI’s Supreme Court-approved constitution, an office bearer can serve for six years before taking a three-year cooling-off period, with a total possible tenure of 18 years across state associations and the BCCI.
At 35 years old, Shah will become the youngest chairman in ICC history.
