All Indian tennis players will commence their Olympic journey against French opponents.
India’s leading singles player, Sumit Nagal, is set to kick off his Paris Olympics campaign against France’s Moutet Corentin, whom he defeated in April. If Nagal wins this match, he could face the challenging Australian world number six, Alex di Minaur, in the second round. Nagal, ranked 80th globally, has a 2-2 head-to-head record with Corentin, who is ranked 12 places above him in the ATP singles standings. Should Nagal advance past the first round, he might encounter Di Minaur, who recently withdrew from his Wimbledon quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic due to a hip injury.
In men’s doubles, Rohan Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji will take on the French duo of Fabien Reboul and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Bopanna has previously played alongside Roger-Vasselin on the ATP Tour.
This Olympics marks Bopanna’s last opportunity to secure a medal. He narrowly missed out on a podium finish with Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles event at the 2016 Rio Games, finishing fourth.
