In a significant setback for India, wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s petition for a joint silver medal at the 2024 Olympics has been dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The initial order has been released, with the detailed decision expected later. CAS stated, “The application filed by Vinesh Phogat on 7 August 2024 is dismissed,” in its preliminary ruling on Wednesday. Phogat was disqualified on the morning of the women’s 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics due to exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams during the weigh-in.
Following her disqualification, Phogat appealed to CAS on August 7, seeking a shared silver medal. However, her plea was rejected, prompting Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha to express her shock and disappointment at the CAS decision to dismiss Phogat’s application against United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The IOA issued a statement noting the far-reaching implications of the August 14 decision, particularly for Phogat and the broader sporting community. “The marginal discrepancy of 100 grams and the resulting disqualification have profound consequences, not only for Vinesh’s career but also in raising serious questions about the clarity and interpretation of such rules.”
The IOA also emphasized the need for a “deeper examination” of the rules and mentioned that it was considering additional legal options. “The IOA strongly believes that disqualifying an athlete for a weight infraction on the second of two weigh-in days demands further scrutiny. Our legal team highlighted this in their submissions before the Sole Arbitrator.”
The statement further criticized the regulations as stringent and potentially inhumane, particularly for female athletes, and called for more equitable standards that prioritize athletes’ well-being. The IOA reiterated its support for Phogat and stated that it is exploring further legal avenues to ensure her case is heard. “The IOA remains committed to advocating for justice and fairness in sports, ensuring that the rights and dignity of athletes are upheld at all times. We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our stakeholders, athletes, and the public,” the statement concluded.
