Indian Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal Sets Historic Record in First Test Against Bangladesh
Indian cricket team opener Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered another impressive performance on Day 1 of the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai. Jaiswal held firm at one end as India lost wickets and went on to score a resilient half-century against a challenging bowling attack. With this fifty, Jaiswal became the first batter in Test cricket’s 147-year history to surpass 750 runs in his first 10 home innings. The previous record of 747 runs was held by West Indies’ George Headley, set in 1935.
Most Test Runs in First 10 Innings at Home:
- 755* – Yashasvi Jaiswal (India)
- 747 – George Headley (West Indies)
- 743 – Javed Miandad (Pakistan)
- 687 – Dave Houghton (Zimbabwe)
- 680 – Sir Viv Richards (West Indies)
Bangladesh’s fast bowler Hasan Mahmud troubled India’s batting lineup, claiming four wickets to leave the hosts at 176-6 by tea on the first day of the Test. Hasan capitalized on the overcast conditions and justified Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto’s decision to bowl first. He dismissed key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom managed just six runs each, reducing India to 34-3 within the first hour.
Jaiswal, who scored 56, put together a 62-run partnership with Rishabh Pant, providing some stability to the innings. However, Pant, in his first Test match since his car accident in 2022, was dismissed for 39 by Hasan after lunch. Jaiswal soon fell to Bangladesh’s rising star Nahid Rana, while spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz dismissed KL Rahul for 16.
Hasan’s early spell of 3-14 set the tone for Bangladesh, with India struggling to recover. By the second break, Ravindra Jadeja (7) and Ravichandran Ashwin (21) were still at the crease.
The second and final Test between India and Bangladesh will begin on September 27 in Kanpur. India is aiming to maintain their top spot in the World Test Championship standings as they embark on a new Test season.
